Nobody ever said that parenting was going to be easy. Parenting when your child comes out as transgender, non-binary, or gender diverse is the type of challenge you were probably not prepared for. If you are in this situation or know someone that is, you probably already know that feeling of being overwhelmed and not knowing where to turn. If you are in Alberta, you are in luck because Trans Parent Alberta 101 was created by a local trailblazer who did the hours of extensive research and compiled a comprehensive list of resources to help you navigate your situation and provide you and your child with the support they deserve.
WHAT IS TRANS PARENT ALBERTA 101?
Trans Parent Alberta 101 is a resource hub created to guide Albertan parents, guardians, caregivers, and allies of transgender, non-binary, and gender diverse children and adults. Trans Parent Alberta 101’s website was designed to help families learn, navigate, and find support and resources that are relevant to people living in the Province of Alberta.
Trans Parent Alberta 101 covers a wide range of topics including where to begin when a child first comes out, local and national support groups, medical and mental health resources, affirming professionals in Alberta, school and education guidance, legal identity document changes, books and media recommendations, and how to be a meaningful ally. Trans Parent Alberta 101 also has information on faith communities, Indigenous Two Spirit identities, and the current political climate affecting trans youth in Alberta.
WHY THIS MATTERS TO US?
The Edmonton Family Network works closely with families in high-conflict situations every day. We are aware from our personal and professional experience that a child’s gender identity can be a major issue between co-parents that have different opinions about their child’s gender identity and freedom of expression. In high-conflict situations, one parent is usually supportive and the other is resistant to change. It can be extremely hard for parents to lose the version of the child that they thought they have which must happen before they can embrace the child that they actually have.
When a child’s true identity is at the core of a co-parenting dispute, the child is put in an extremely uncomfortable position. Research consistently shows that family support is extremely important for positive outcomes for 2SLGBTQI+ youth. All children deserve unconditional love and it’s crucial for their mental health and wellbeing. A child who is accepted at home is more likely to survive and thrive. We are here to help parents see the big picture and find the right support for their family. Trans Parent Alberta 101 is exactly the kind of resource we are proud to point families toward.
